Servers For Everyone

By simple definition, servers are a computer configured to provide services to a client machine or user. They work like a task master managing numerous network requests, different system jobs, files, and processes. Servers can be used for a multitude of reasons and purposes and they are commonly used for web hosting solutions.

Servers prove very versatile for a number of user needs. Whether you require file storage management, a web hosting solution, an email server, or a network firewall, servers are extremely utile. It is hard to find any modern business that does not utilize a server in one way or other.

Web hosting servers are generally configured in three offerings: shared hosting, virtual, and dedicated. Shared web hosting is extremely common these days as it has become easy to implement and very affordable. Websites on a shared hosting solution all use the same IP and share system resources. Virtual servers, on the other hand, are separate "virtual" entities on the system which act like their own individual servers, wherein they each receive their own allocation of resources. Lastly, dedicated servers use the entire system and have access to all the system's resources.

Average users, students and professionals in particular, will discover many benefits from setting up their servers. You can learn quite a bit about the internet, web hosting, and computers in general by setting up your own personal server. The process can take technical troubleshooting and patience to get things working right, but ultimately you control everything. You configure things the way you want.

With technology today, basically any computer can be configured as a server. Not all hardware is designed specifically for server purposes but they can still do the job. Regardless, the majority of computer systems will support the even the most basic server software. Some things should be taken into consideration, however: sufficient cooling, storage location, power requirements, sufficient memory and resources, and processing power, among other things.

To become a web server, a machine will need the right server software. You can find a number of open-sourced server software solutions for free online, as well as many commercial solutions. Among the large number of possible software choices, home users may want to consider the following: Ubuntu Server Edition, FreeBSD, Red Hat Linux, FreeNas, Debian, and Windows Home Server.

Since many people now require an increased amount of file storage or hard drive space, users might want to think about setting up a file server. A file storage solution within the walls of your own home is a great option, although this solution usually makes more sense for small businesses.

Everyone has different needs and requirements and with the right setup, a personal server in your home is a great option. An old computer could be lying around that you could setup as a firewall, or small web server. Web hosting is very affordable these days, but for students and professionals, a personal server is a very valuable resource.
